Movie Review: Luck By Chance starring Farhan Akhtar, Konkona Sen Sharma, Rishi Kapoor and Hrithik Roshan

Hi everyone,

Luck By Chance has been in the news for quite some time as this is Farhan Akhtar's sister's directorial debut. Zoya Akhtar does not promise you just a good entertainer but an entertaining film with substance. You do not have to be an actor or be involved in the film industry to like this one...this is a film that can be used for any person in whatever field of work.

The film is all about two wannabe actors Vikram Jai Singh (Farhan Akhtar) and Sona Mishra (Konkona Sen Sharma). They both support each other in finding fame in the Hindi Film Industry and also have a loving relationship. Then there is Romy Rolly (Rishi Kapoor) who is a producer and is making a film with his brother directing it. The leading star cast for the film is Zaffar Khan (Hrithik Roshan) and Nikki Walia (Isha Sharvani). Unfortunately, Zaffar decided not to be in the film as his role is unconventional, hence leading the leading male actor slot open. Sona goes to a producer all the time asking for work, although he promises to put her in his big budget movie, he fails to live up to the promise. Then the film goes on to how Vikram gets the role in the film that Zaffar Khan opted out of and how fame or the road to fame can affect our relationships. Do we leave our loved ones behind? How people in the industry are like chameleons? Who do we trust in such an industry?

Visually, the film is excellent. Cinematographer Carlos Catalan does a great job and each scene has something to tell thanks to the brilliant screenplay. Writers Zoya and Farhan Akhtar do a great job with bringing the script onto the celluloid so beautifully. Each cameo in the story is backed up and are not just thrown in for the star value. A lot of praise needs to go to that.

The songs are all great and most of all, one needs to praise Hrithik Roshan with his dancing in 'Baawre'. He brings a lot of his positive energy into that song and totally looks like he is enjoying himself. The whole choreography for the song is amazing. All the songs strike a chord and are mainly with the narrative.

The director, Zoya Akhtar has done a tremendous job and this is possibly by far, the best debut for a director this decade. If the 90s has brought us Karan Johar and Adi Chopra then the decade of 2000 has brought us Farhan Akhtar and Zoya Akhtar. Full praise for Zoya as she beautifully brings a film from a script and a screenplay and bringing it full effect on the big screen. She brings out every performance in the film amazingly, even the cameos do not disappoint!

For the performances:
Farhan Akhtar - Amazing performance and this is an actor-director that has full potential to go far. I am glad that he is taking acting seriously too. He brings out the character and shows how much someone has to go through in order to get to fame. He shows the dark side of his character with just as much passion as he shows the good side. Takes a very good actor to do that and most of all, I could empathise with his character.
Konkona Sen Sharma - Once again, this lady never disappoints. She totally understands her character and this shows in her portrayal. She shows how women in the industry are treated differently and that if a girl wants to become an actress, it is not about talent but more the look of the 'actress'. This beautiful actress shows in her performance that it is not the beauty in the body and face that make an actress but it is the acting ability that makes an actress!
Rishi Kapoor - The legend himself proves to why he is one of the best veteran actors of our time. He is totally into his punjabi character and one should see the scene when he is upset about Zaffar opting out the film. The way he emotes as his character is just amazing!
Finally, I go to Hrithik Roshan, who does a special appearance in this movie. What an actor and a surprise. He is into his character straight away and performs excellently! He leaves his mark graciously.
Obviously Dimple Kapadia, Sanjay Kapoor, Juhi Chawla and Isha Sharvani all do an excellent first-rate job!
However, how can we end this without mentioning the one cameo that leaves an impression, that leaves a mark with one or two minutes. Yes, we all know who it is and that is Shah Rukh Khan! In fact, he is the turning point in the film and gives the most important message. This little cameo proves to not the industry but to fans of Hindi Films...that Shah Rukh Khan is possibly the most genuine star/actor in the business! By the way, that is no exaggeration, those that will watch it, will definitely agree!

Overall, a top movie exceeding immensely in every department. All praises go to the director Zoya Akhtar, I wish her all the best with her future films. She is a promising director! Farhan for giving an amazing performance along with Konkona. Hrithik...amazing performance and it was great seeing him on screen once again! Also praise to all the cameos especially Shah Rukh Khan! This film will definitely be a hit! It deserves to be, so get out of your homes and catch this film at a nearby cinema!

Rating: 4.5/5 - Excellent movie on all aspects!

Lots of love,
Rahul N. Singh
